A colonial outpost……
Arriving after sunset into Denpasar, the sweet smell of incense and the tropical humidity are overwhelming…in a good way……as the gamelan plays over the loud speakers and the holiday revellers feel the pressures of work and life at home dissipate, the movement towards the gates and the night air is quietly feverish…..
As we twist and turn through the streets of the city, it’s like a moving snapshot of people’s communities around the dinner table, across the pool tables, in front of their food stalls, beside their friends, next to their Mothers…..the lives of Denpasar and beyond are pulsing……and yet arriving after 10pm to The Colony, it seems the outpost of Seminyak at night is quiet and serene….
The pool at night is the jewel in the crown, as the focal point of this boutique hotel it is stunning….every room opens out on to this communal space, where you can enjoy a light breakfast in the morning, get some sun during the day, or sip on a mojito after dark. The rooms themselves range from petite to generous in size, the junior suites the largest of them all, have a beautiful balcony, perfect for lounging in privacy in the hot afternoons…..the interiors are sleek, fresh and feature touches of modernity combined with beautiful old Balinese photographs and the famous Polianthes tuberosa or tuberoses as they are commonly known. These tiny white flowers give off the most insane scent, but they only come to life at night…..like numerous other things in Bali…..
